Reiki vs. Energy Healing — What's the Real Difference?
Reiki is one lineage inside the wider world of energy healing. Here is what makes it distinct, what happens in a session, and how to choose the right modality.
Reiki vs. Energy Healing — What's the Real Difference?
"Energy healing" is an umbrella term. Reiki is one specific tradition sitting under that umbrella — with a lineage, a training system, and a formal attunement process.
If you are searching for either in Colorado — or asking whether to book a Reiki session or a broader energy healing session — this is the honest breakdown.
What Reiki Actually Is
Reiki (霊気, roughly "spiritual energy") was systematized in early-1900s Japan by Mikao Usui. It travels through a lineage: to practice Reiki, a teacher initiates ("attunes") the student, opening specific energy channels. This lineage matters — it is what distinguishes a certified Reiki practitioner from a well-intentioned amateur.
As a certified Reiki Master in the Usui lineage, I work with:
- Traditional Usui symbols and hand positions
- Distance Reiki (yes, it works — energy is not bothered by geography)
- Reiki combined with other modalities when appropriate
What "Energy Healing" Covers
"Energy healing" is any practice that works with the body's subtle field — the layer beneath physical tissue that traditional medicine is only recently learning to name. It includes:
- Reiki (Japanese, lineage-based)
- Pranic healing (based on prana, the Sanskrit life-force)
- Therapeutic touch (developed for nursing contexts)
- Qi gong healing (from Chinese medicine)
- Intuitive energy work (practitioner-specific, non-lineage)
- Chakra balancing (an assessment framework more than a modality)
Some overlap. Some are quite distinct. A good practitioner will name their lineage clearly. If a "healer" cannot explain what they trained in, that is worth noticing.
What a Reiki Session Feels Like
You stay fully clothed. You lie on a padded table (or sit in a chair if lying down is uncomfortable). I place my hands lightly on or just above the body, working through a sequence of positions from crown to feet.
Most recipients describe it as:
- Warm — sometimes surprisingly so, as if a heater passed over the body
- Tingling — like static electricity, but softer
- Deeply relaxing — many people fall asleep, which is fine and welcome
- Emotionally moving — tears sometimes surface, especially around old grief held in the body
A session runs 60 minutes. Distance sessions run 45. You will drink a lot of water afterward.
What Reiki Is Not
- Not a substitute for medical care. Reiki complements medicine; it does not replace it.
- Not religion. It grew from Buddhist practice but does not require belief.
- Not "healing" in the sense of curing disease. Reiki supports the body's own regulatory systems. Claims of curing cancer with Reiki are irresponsible.
- Not massage. There is no manipulation of muscle or tissue.
Choosing Between Reiki and General Energy Healing
| You want... | Book... |
|---|---|
| A traceable, lineage-based tradition | Reiki |
| Deep relaxation and nervous-system reset | Reiki |
| A blended session with intuitive guidance | Energy healing / intuitive work |
| Something quick and focused on a specific issue | A shorter Reiki tune-up |
On my services page Reiki is booked separately from psychic and mediumship work — though they can be combined when the sitting calls for it.
Reiki in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs
I hold Reiki sessions in my Manitou sanctum (minutes from Colorado Springs), or by distance for anyone in the world. Distance sessions are especially useful for chronic pain, insomnia, and grief.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does distance Reiki really work? Yes. Reiki is not a physical substance — it is subtle energy, and distance is not a barrier. I have held distance sessions with clients on the other side of the world with the same results as in-person work.
How often should I receive Reiki? For acute stress, a session every 1–2 weeks for a month, then monthly. For general wellness, once a month is plenty. Your body will tell you when it needs another.
Can Reiki help with anxiety and insomnia? Most clients report significant improvement in both after 2–3 sessions. It is not a substitute for treatment if you are in clinical distress, but it is a strong complement.
Is it safe during pregnancy? Yes. Reiki is gentle and non-invasive. Many midwives recommend it.

A Companion Guide: Reiki vs. Energy Healing
The world of holistic wellness is vast, and "energy healing" has become a beautifully broad umbrella term for wellness practices that optimize the body's subtle energy systems. Yet, when browsing service menus, you will often see "Reiki" listed alongside, or distinct from, general energy healing.
If both modalities aim to restore balance and vitality, what exactly sets them apart?
The Umbrella vs. The Lineage
To understand the distinction, it helps to think of Energy Healing as the broad category. It encompasses ancient and modern modalities alike — including acupuncture, qigong, crystal healing, shamanic clearing, and sound therapy.
Reiki, on the other hand, is a specific lineage within that wider world. Developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, Reiki translates to "Universal Life Force Energy."
What Makes Reiki Distinct?
- The Attunement Process: Unlike general intuitive energy workers who may rely on their own inherited or self-taught methods, a Reiki practitioner must be formally "attuned" by a Reiki Master. This process opens the practitioner's channels to connect specifically to the Usui Reiki frequency.
- A Structured Protocol: Traditional Reiki sessions often follow a specific sequence of hand positions on or just above the body's major energy centers (chakras), ensuring a systematic flow of healing.
- The Practitioner as a Conduit: In pure Reiki, the practitioner does not use their own personal energy, nor do they manipulate the client's energy. They act purely as a clear pipe or conduit through which the universal life force flows to where it is most needed.
Whether you choose a highly structured Reiki session or an intuitive, fluid energy healing session, both paths offer a profound return to center, melting away stress and inviting your body back into its natural state of harmony.
