Psychic vs. Medium vs. Clairvoyant — Understanding the Differences

Seekers often arrive using the words interchangeably. "I want a psychic. A medium. A clairvoyant. Whatever you call it."

They are not the same. Knowing the difference will help you book the sitting that answers your actual question.

Psychic

A psychic reads energy — the currents around a living person, the choices branching in front of them, the way the present is shaping the future. A psychic reading answers questions like:

  • What is the pattern I keep repeating in relationships?
  • Should I take this job?
  • What does my next year look like?
  • Why does this decision feel so heavy?

Every human being has some psychic ability. Some of us have trained ours the way a violinist trains an ear.

Medium

A medium connects with those who have crossed over. This is a narrower gift than psychic ability — most psychics are not mediums, though most mediums are also psychic.

Mediumship sittings answer questions like:

  • Is my mother at peace?
  • What did my father want to tell me before he died?
  • Is my miscarried baby held somewhere loving?
  • Can my grandfather send me a sign that he is still with me?

A true medium brings specifics — nicknames, private jokes, the smell of a particular pipe tobacco, a phrase only you two ever used. Vague messages ("someone with a name starting with J loves you") are not mediumship. They are cold reading.

If you want more depth here, we wrote a full primer on psychic vs. medium.

Clairvoyant

Clairvoyance — literally "clear seeing" — is one of the ways a psychic or medium receives information. It is not a separate profession; it is a channel.

The traditional four "clairs" are:

  • Clairvoyance — clear seeing (images, symbols, scenes)
  • Clairaudience — clear hearing (words, names, songs)
  • Clairsentience — clear feeling (emotions, physical sensations)
  • Claircognizance — clear knowing (information that simply arrives without source)

Most practitioners work with two or three at once. I lean clairsentient and claircognizant, with clairvoyance opening in mediumship work.

What About Tarot, Astrology, Reiki?

Those are tools and modalities, not gifts.

  • Tarot is a symbolic language a psychic may use to organize what they receive.
  • Astrology is a mathematical map of tendencies — powerful, but distinct from mediumship.
  • Reiki is energy healing — hands-on (or hands-near) work with the body's subtle field. I am a certified Reiki Master; you can book Reiki separately.

Red Flags in Any of These

  • Anyone who tells you there is a curse and they can lift it for a fee. Run.
  • Anyone who guarantees a specific outcome ("your ex will come back in 30 days").
  • Anyone who pressures you into more sessions than you asked for.
  • Anyone unwilling to explain how they work.

Good psychics and mediums are transparent. Ask questions. Interview the person before you sit with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are psychics and mediums religious? Some are, some are not. My work is spiritual but not tied to any one tradition — I have Norse roots (seiðr), Christian roots, and years of interfaith study. What matters is honesty, not label.

Can a psychic tell me lottery numbers? No. If we could, we would not be working.

Can a medium contact anyone I ask for? Usually — but Spirit chooses who comes forward. Sometimes the loved one you expected is quiet and someone unexpected steps in with the message you actually needed.

A Companion Guide: Psychic vs. Medium vs. Clairvoyant

In the realm of the intuitive arts, words like psychic, medium, and clairvoyant are frequently tossed around as interchangeable synonyms. However, while they all share the common thread of extra-sensory perception, they actually represent entirely distinct gifts and practices.

If you are seeking spiritual guidance, understanding these nuances ensures you book the right practitioner for your current needs. Here is a clear-eyed guide to what each one does.

1. The Psychic: Mapping the Living Energy

A psychic tunes into the energetic field of people, places, and situations in the physical world. They read your aura, your past, your current trajectories, and the potential outcomes of your choices.

Best for: Guidance on career changes, relationship dynamics, personal growth, and navigating life transitions.

2. The Medium: Bridging the Worlds

There is a classic saying in the spiritual community: All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. A medium acts as a bridge between the physical world and the spirit world. They specifically channel energy from consciousness that has passed on — such as ancestors, deceased loved ones, or spiritual guides.

Best for: Seeking closure, processing grief, or connecting with loved ones who have crossed over.

3. The Clairvoyant: The Art of Clear Seeing

"Clairvoyant" translates literally from French as "clear seeing." This is a specific sensory style of receiving intuitive information. A clairvoyant receives insights via visual flashes, symbols, metaphors, or inner movies in their mind's eye. This differs from a clairaudient (clear hearing) or a clairsentient (clear feeling).

Best for: Gaining vivid, symbolic, or highly visual map-work of a situation.

By identifying what your soul is truly craving — be it earthly direction or ethereal connection — you can step into your next session with absolute clarity.
